Nifty's high came in the first fifteen minutes and its low in the next fifteen. From 9:45 to the close it touched neither again. Volume in the August future was the thinnest of its life as the near contract, and open interest still rose.
Nifty closed 24,583.80, up 13.15. High 24,620.95 by 9:30, low 24,511.10 by 9:45 — a 110-point day, and all of it was made in half an hour. For the next five and three-quarter hours the index never went near either end.
The August future traded 11.30 lakh against 41.07 lakh on 4 August, the thinnest of the nine sessions since it became the near contract. Yet open interest rose 1.02 lakh to 121.51 lakh. Volume is how many hands the market passed through. Open interest is how many positions were still standing at the bell. Today the first collapsed and the second grew — which is not people leaving, because leaving would shrink it. Almost nobody traded, and almost nobody left.
Underneath, a different day entirely. PSU Bank fell 1.67%, the worst on the board by more than double, dragging Bank Nifty down 59.50 even as Financial Services closed up 0.30%. Realty led at plus 1.35%. Midcap 100 rose 0.62% and touched 63,986.70 — its highest ever. Smallcap 100 fell 0.27%. Seven of fifteen indices up.
Which is this year in one line. Since January the Nifty 50 is down 5.9%. Midcap 100 is up 4.1%.
And a third thing, quieter than both. Nifty IT closed at 31,631. On 29 June it was 25,699. It is up 23% in six weeks — and still 31% below its December 2024 peak. The most damaged sector on the board has been the fastest-moving one all summer, and it has not made a headline once.

There is no such thing as "the market."
On a day the index moved thirteen points, one sector made an all-time high, another fell 1.67%, and a third finished a 23% run nobody reported. The number on the news channel described none of them.
The index is an average, and an average is the one thing that is never actually happening to anybody. What is happening is that money left one place and went to another. Today it went to midcaps and property, and it left the government banks.
That movement has a direction, it takes months, and it is visible weeks before it shows up in the headline number — if you are looking at fifteen lines instead of one.
Your turn
Which way this week?
Answer before you know. Being wrong is how this works.
