Thirty years, seven moments
1995
Nifty starts at 1,000
Fifty companies, one number, set at a thousand on 3 November. Everything since is measured from there.
2000
The technology crash
It had roughly doubled in a year on internet companies. It gave all of it back over the next eighteen months. Nobody rang a bell at the top.
2008
The world banking crisis
Roughly 6,300 in January. Roughly 2,500 by October. Sixty per cent gone in ten months, and it took five years to get back.
2020
Covid
12,362 on 14 January. 7,610 on 23 March — thirty-eight per cent gone in nine weeks. It finished the same year at 13,982, higher than it started.
2026 Q1
Down 14.5%
26,130 at the end of December. 22,331 at the end of March. The war and the shut sea gate.
2026 Q2
Up 6.9%
22,331 to 23,866. No announcement, no all-clear. It simply stopped falling.
2026 Q3
Up 3.0% so far
23,866 to 24,584. Still 5.9% below where the year began.
Every one of those was obvious afterwards and invisible at the time. That is the whole difficulty, and it is why you write the reason down before you know.
Before you answer — why?
Write it first. In six months this sentence is what teaches you, not the answer.
Come back when it is over. You will see what the market did, and the reason you gave, side by side. Do that twenty times and you will know something about yourself that no course teaches.
