One number the market has not closed above since February
Nifty last closed above 24,888 on 27 February. That is 104 trading sessions ago — more than five months.
In all of that time it got above 24,888 exactly once, and only for part of a day. On 2 March the market reached 24,989 in the session and closed at 24,865.70. Twenty-two points below. It has not been near it since.
Learn to separate those two things, because most people don't. Reaching a number and closing above it are not the same event. Anyone watching a screen at noon on 2 March saw the market above 24,888 and believed something had changed. By the close it hadn't. The high tells you what people were willing to pay at one moment. The close tells you what they were willing to hold overnight — with the news still coming, and their own money on the line. Only one of those is a decision.
At the other end, 24,444 has held for three sessions. On 4 August the market went under it during the day, low 24,427, and finished at 24,614. Pierced and reclaimed, same day. Three days is not a floor yet. It is a line the market has looked at twice and stepped back from — worth watching precisely because it is young and nothing about it is settled.
So there is a number above that has resisted for five months, and a number below that is three days old. That is the honest description of where this market sits. Everything else this morning is noise.
THE CHAIN: No clean single reason today — this is a market sitting between an old ceiling and a new floor, and neither has broken.
