Nifty Down 4% In A Month As Oil Climbs Past $100

THE CHAIN: Oil above $100 a barrel pushed global bond yields to multi-year highs this week, and that pressure pulled Nifty and Bank Nifty down for three straight sessions — until Thursday, when both closed higher despite US markets falling for a fourth day in a row.

BONDS

The US 10-year Treasury yield closed at 4.84% on Thursday, 10 September, easing one basis point from Wednesday. Earlier in the week it touched 4.93%, its highest level since October 2023. The US Treasury completed a buyback of $5.19 billion out of a planned $6 billion in long-dated bonds on Thursday — three times its usual buyback size — as it works to manage the yield curve.

Japan's 10-year government bond yield touched 3% on 1 September, the first time it has reached that level since 1996. Over the four weeks to 9 September, it ranged between 2.78% and 3.02%.

India's 10-year G-Sec yield reached 6.96% on 4 September, a twelve-week high.

CURRENCY

The rupee closed at 95.26 to the dollar on Thursday, 10 September, weaker by 0.4% from Wednesday. The Dollar Index held around 98.8 on Thursday, pausing after a decline that had taken it below 99 for the first time since 26 August.

GLOBAL MARKETS

US: The Dow Jones Industrial Average closed at 52,064.10 on Thursday, down 0.6% — its fourth straight losing session. The S&P 500 closed at 7,591.70, down 0.58%. The Nasdaq Composite closed at 26,081.73, down 0.65%. The VIX closed at 17.84, up 8.38% and above 17 for the first time in 28 sessions; it touched 18.17 intraday.

Europe: The FTSE 100 closed at 10,608.92 on Thursday, down 0.57%. The DAX closed at 25,361.15, down 0.84%. The CAC 40 closed at 8,116.76, down 0.49%.

Asia: The Nikkei 225 closed at 65,270.95 on Thursday, up 0.20%. The Shanghai Composite closed at 3,934.40, down 0.43%. The Hang Seng closed at 24,954.47, down 1.27%.

INDIA

Nifty 50 closed at 23,477.8 on Thursday, 10 September — up 0.20% from Wednesday's 23,431.5, after three consecutive lower closes on 7, 8 and 9 September.

Bank Nifty closed at 56,471.95 on Thursday, up 0.31% from Wednesday's 56,295.55, following the same three-day decline.

India VIX closed at 11.92 on Wednesday, 9 September, up 6.81% from Tuesday.

GIFT Nifty was quoted at 23,348 as of 9:01 AM IST on Friday, 11 September — down 137 points from Thursday's close.

WHO IS BUYING

On Wednesday, 9 September — the most recent confirmed session — FIIs were net sellers of ₹582.99 crore in the cash market. DIIs were net buyers of ₹1,509.04 crore.

COMMODITIES

Brent crude closed at $107.63 a barrel on Thursday, up 5.9% — its highest close since 19 May. WTI closed at $102.48, up 6.7%. Since the US-Iran war began at the end of February, WTI has risen 52.9%, and is up 78.5% for the year so far.

MCX gold closed at ₹1,53,763 per 10 grams on Wednesday, 9 September. It traded near ₹1,53,650 through Thursday morning, down ₹113 from that close. Spot gold closed at $4,405.88 an ounce globally on Thursday, up 0.18%.

MCX silver closed at ₹2,44,213 per kilogram on Wednesday. It traded near ₹2,43,100 through Thursday morning, down ₹907 from Wednesday's close.

Copper traded around $6.76 a pound on Thursday, close to its record high, on the COMEX and LME exchanges.

INDIA'S PRICE NUMBER

India's headline CPI inflation was 4.45% year-on-year in July 2026, released on 12 August — the highest reading since December 2024. Food inflation was 5.52%.

GLOBAL NEWS

10 September: The US Treasury completed a $5.19 billion buyback of long-dated bonds, out of a planned $6 billion — triple its usual size.

10 September: The European Central Bank raised its policy rate by 25 basis points and lifted its inflation forecasts.

9 September: The Dow closed lower for a fourth straight session as the US-Iran conflict, now in its seventh month, kept oil prices elevated.

1 September: Japan's 10-year government bond yield touched 3% for the first time since 1996.
